COGNITIVE LIBERTIES
"Cognitive liberties" is a growing field that developed in response to the type of technology that is invasive and non-consensual. Some consider even the Japanese vending machine that aims a directed acoustic beam to sell more cola (Wouldn't you like a Coke?) to be invasive. To the ACLA, cognitive liberties include thoughts, physical sensations, emotions, and behavior.
Many Americans, including ethicists, attorneys, scientists, and human rights activists, are concerned that this technology could infringe upon many individual rights, not least the right to free thought. Other countries are beginning to recognize the use of this technology (particularly the weapons technology) as a human rights violation.
